LOKELMA is a prescription medication for the treatment of high levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia) in adults. LOKELMA should not be used as an emergency treatment for life-threatening hyperkalemia because of its delayed onset of action.

For those undergoing hemodialysisHemodialysisA procedure where a dialysis machine and a special filter are used to clean the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally., the recommended dose of LOKELMA is:
One 5 g packet once a day on non-dialysis days only.
If you are taking other medications, you may need to take them 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking LOKELMA.
Your healthcare provider will monitor your potassium levels and may adjust your dose. Work with your healthcare provider to find the dose that works for you.
Tell your healthcare provider about all of your medications. Do not take LOKELMA on dialysis days. Tell your healthcare provider if you suddenly feel sick such as decreased oral intake of food or fluids or diarrhea, as you may be at risk of developing low levels of potassium in your blood while on LOKELMA; therefore, your dose of LOKELMA may need to be adjusted.

There are 3 steps to taking LOKELMA:

Fill your cup with at least 3 tablespoons of water

Empty the entire contents of the LOKELMA packet(s) into the cup

Stir well and drink immediately. Don't worry—it's odorless and tasteless. If there is powder left, add more water, stir, and drink again. Repeat until all the powder is gone
LOKELMA can be taken with or without food
People in the LOKELMA studies did not have to be on a low-potassium diet
If you have been prescribed other oral medications, you may need to take LOKELMA 2 hours before or 2 hours after your medication
Talk to your healthcare provider to find out if you need to make any changes to your diet or timing of other medications.
